Why going home early doesn’t work
Your intentions were there before, you wanted to stop your working early. Or earlier. Going home on time and allowing yourself to spend more time with your loved ones. Perhaps even with more energy.
Every holiday it is the same. Upon return, you are certain this time you will do it differently. You will not work until late. And you do, you go home early. For two days. Then everything is back to normal. So, this time, you tell yourself, it will be different.
Being home on time means a lot
No angry faces. Eating healthy, and something that tastes nice, instead of one of those hasty and quickly done meals. Also, you have a lot of time after dinner. TIME, without work. You are smiling already, are not you? As gosh that sounds great. Something to look forward to.
But even though you know you would like nothing better, this is not going to work. Not really. As you do have an immense amount of work waiting for you. There is a lot you need to do. And your workload will only expand when you leave early one night. So it is actually more relaxed to work through, as this causes you less stress.
Why going home one night early doesn’t work
This is how it often goes. We set ourselves up to do something different, but when we find out it causes more problems, we will let it go again. It is not worth it, the added stress the next days. Even though we really want it.
The reason why it causes more issues under it does not solve anything is because you are not adjusting your work on a structural basis. So if you already have a lot of work, going home early isn’t a solution.
What does work, is making fundamental changes in your workload. Make sure that your workload diminishes, and that you have less work waiting for you upon return.
There are various ways to make this happen, and the ideal solution depends on your personal situation I would love to tell you more about it in a personal conversation.
What would help you to structurally diminish your workload
Even though each situation is different, and your situation is truly unique, which requires a unique approach; there are several things that everyone could do to reduce their workload.
It is most important to be busy with, and focus on, those activities that make the most impact. Doing the work that adds the most value.
Business that is less important takes up a lot of your time and makes less of a difference in your added value, that is the business you want to let go off as soon as possible. You can do this by stopping altogether, delegating, or simply have it done by someone else.
No is also an option
Besides this, is planning realistically crucial. The busier you are, the easier you think oh I will do that quickly. Or in between.
Be realistic. Take the time you would actually need to do the work. Plan accordingly, so you do not promise anything, you cannot deliver on, without working late.
Finally, no is also an option. Busy people, those who are able to do a lot of work, are often asked to do something extracts. To help out with something, or to co-host an event, and then organising it while you are at it. Do you not do it. Say no, if it is not what helps you to make an impact.
