You’ve given my ambitions wings, thanks for all the insights. I am willing to take action now, I just needed this wake-up call.
This weekend I presented on the ‘Get your business off the ground event’ and this was the feedback I got. What I shared and what inspired my client so much, I will share with you today as well.
I encourage you to join in the exercise. Even when you may have seen it before, even when you are pressed for time. It may give your ambition wings again..
Take control of your life, it’s your party
I am ambitious, driven and I love my work. And even at times when I didn’t love my work, my inner drive will make sure that I show up and do my outmost to deliver.
Recognise this by any chance? It can be lethal at times.
An inner drive and ambitions are great, it gets you far. It may also make you blind for what is needed in this situation and what you need.
The best inspiration, the most creative ideas and yes even the greatest results may only be obtained when there is enough downtime. When you allow yourself to relax, to unwind and when you give your brain a rest.
What is most important in my life?
A good question is not it? I am sure things already popped into your mind, did not they? So here is the exercise, which I encourage you to complete. Scribble your answers on a napkin, take notes in your head and you’ll be amazed by the outcome after less than 5 minutes.
Write down -in order of sequence- the top 5 things that are most important to you. These are matters you spend time on (e.g. hobbies) or people (e.g. children) you spend time with.
Easy to answer right? What or who is most important to you? Now for the next step.
What do I spend the most time on?
The reality check, what do you spend your time on. Remember this includes things you do and people you hang out with.
Write down -in order of sequence- the top 5 things that take up most of your time. These can be matters you spend time on (e.g. work) or people (e.g. clients) you spend time with.
Now you have done that, let’s get precise.
Now write down the % of the time you spent on your top 5 items next to each item, adding up to 100% in total, e.g. I spend my time on work for 70% of my total time spent. Yes, you can skip sleeping indeed.
How much time do I spend on what is important to me?
It’s time for the wake-up call. Combine the above two lists you made. How much time do you actually spend on the things that are important to you?
Take your first top 5 of the most important things and write down the % of your second list, time spent.
What picture do you get?
When you are a bit like me, when I first did this exercise, your results may be shocking. For me, I was faced with the reality that I worked for 70-80% of my time and that at least 2 of the things I loved, that was important to me, did barely get any time of me. How is that for you? Is it aligned or is it time for a change?
Stop spending time on things that don’t matter
Going through this exercise makes clear whether it is time to change. Stop spending time on things ánd people that don’t matter. Don’t really know where to start? I am happy to help.
