Schools are closed, as are the restaurants and bars, here in the Netherlands. Are you working from home too? This might be a bit different than you are used to.

There is a lot more possible than you may think. As I have been working from home for over a decade now, I know some of the advantages. Yes, there are advantages. If you do not see any of them right now, and you feel unhappy do not hesitate to reach out. I am here to help.

  1. Start with a work-out.
  2. No stress about what to wear.
  3. No travel time.
  4. Working tranquilly in your own space.
  5. Healty lunch!
  6. More focus, less distraction.
  7. Family and relaxation time.

1.    Start the day with a work-out

Now you are working from home, fitness is implementable into your programme. Start your day with it, to ensure the effects continue during the day. You become more productive from it. Some people prefer to work-out at the end of the day, which also works well now.

Tip: When you really want to start your day well, start it with the “Miracle Morning” according to the book of Hal Elrod. It will help you to determine what it is you are working on this day and how those actions will help you achieve your target.

Trick: Are you not such a sporty person, but still keen on working out? Do not overdo it, as you most likely will not be able to keep it up. But start small, with doable actions, by using the app the 7-minute workout for example.

2.    No stress about what to wear

Since you are working from home, it is all of a sudden a lot less important what it is you wear. There are not that many people that will work in their suit from home. You could be working in your yoga pants instead if you would like.

Tip: When you have online business meetings, make sure that your clothes are representable. When you are choosing to combine your PJ bottoms with a more business-like upper attire, do remember not to stand up from behind your desk, while on video.

Trick: It can be great to walk around in your nightgown the entire day, or in your work-out gear, but fact is, it will impact your productivity in a negative way. Rather dress for work, albeit slightly less formal, in order to get to work.

3.    No travel time

Some of the biggest advantages, in my eyes, of working from home are no travel time, no traffic jams, no delays and no endless searching for a parking spot.

Instead, be able to start straight away, without further delay. Now that you are no longer dependent on traffic or public transport, you are capable of working longer and determining your own working hours.
Tip: Plan ahead and determine your working hours. For example from 8 till 4. By setting these times ahead you’ll work in a more productive way, you’ll start on time and you’ll make sure that your work is finished before the day ends.

Trick: Travel time from and to your workspace may also be the ideal time for you to adjust. Adjusting your role at home towards your role in the office. Without travelling time you can still achieve this by physically sitting somewhere else at home, or by taking a stroll outside before you start.

4.    Working tranquilly in your own space

No more being distracted by that loud colleague on the phone next to you, or because a colleague is asking you questions constantly. Instead, be able to work at your own favourite spot. Which can be inside, and even outside in the garden.

Tip: Working from home works best when you have a dedicated spot, for example, an office. Go there to work, and take a break in another location, by being outside for example.

Trick: Do you not have an office and are you working behind your kitchen table? That makes it harder for your housemates and family to see when you are working and when you have a break. Make sure to clearly articulate when you can be disturbed and when you cannot.

5.    Lovely healthy lunch

Now you are working from home, you have ample time to prepare your lunch. Are you normally one for grabbing a quick snack? Now is the time to cook a healthy meal. Make a salad, or something other nutritious and enjoy.

Tip: Taking a break and actually leaving your desk, will stimulate your productivity. So do not alone take a lunch break, but take a proper break or even take a nap. After that, you will be replenished.

Trick: When there are no colleagues to have lunch with, the temptation is there to continue working from behind your desk. Allow yourself a proper break. And make sure to drink sufficient water, as 5% dehydration will quickly mean 30% concentration loss.

6.   More focus and less distraction

A great advantage of working from home is the possibility to have more focus. You have fewer meetings and are less bothered by people surrounding you.

Tip: Determine what it is you are working on during a day. Domestic tasks should not be done “in-between”, now you’re at home but after working hours. Communicate these to colleagues and family, so everyone knows when you can and cannot be reached. Keep yourself and them to these times.

Trick: Working from home can be lonely. Would you normally have a face-to-face meeting? See whether this can be done online, via video chat programmes like zoom, and skype. Keep in contact with your colleagues through different means of communication like Instant Messaging and WhatsApp. As the feeling to be part of something bigger is crucial for your happiness at work.

7.    Make time for relaxation and your family

Now you don’t have any travel time, you will be less interrupted and you are able to focus more, your productivity is sky-high. That is why many tasks take less time. Done working? Call it a day. You’ll become fitter and more relaxed now that you have a chance.

Tip: At the end of your working day, do something relaxing, something that brings you joy. Even in these times, there is loads to think of that you can do. Have you already partaken in a virtual tour in a museum?

Trick: Now you are earlier done working, your tendency might be to continue working. Sometimes there may be a need for this, just make sure not to do this on a structural basis. Realise that you get more done by taking regular breaks. That does include stopping on time at the end of the day.
